Samurai Champloo and Paranoia Agent to Adult Swim

Starting this Summer, Samurai Champloo and Paranoia Agent will premiere on Adult Swim’s Saturday Action block.

A unique blend of samurai action and Hip-Hop style, Samurai Champloo chronicles the journey of a young girl named Fuu as she wrangles two wandering samurai into joining her on her search for a samurai that smells like sunflowers. Mugen is a crass Okinawan swordsman who fights with his own haphazard style, a sharp contrast to the stoic Jin, who is the epitome of aloof samurai poise. The latest project from Shinichiro Watanabe of Cowboy Bebop and Animatrix fame, Samurai Champloo also features the talents of character designer and animation director Kazuto Nakazawa, who directed the animated portion of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill and Mahiro Maeda, a collaborator on Animatrix and Last Exile. Driven by a powerful musical score with contributions from both American and Japanese hip-hop artists, including Tsutchie, fat jon, Nujabes and FORCE OF NATURE, Samurai Champloo redefines anachronism and breathes new life into the action genre.

Taken from a Geneon Entertainment press release:

From director Satoshi Kon, the brilliant mind behind the critically lauded anime features Millennium Actress, Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfathers, comes the chilling psychological thriller Paranoia Agent. Showcasing Kon’s extraordinary visual style and unique storyline by seamlessly blending fantasy and reality into an intriguing mystery, Paranoia Agent features 13 episodes of spine-tingling animation from Japan’s premiere animation studio Madhouse (Gungrave, Trigun, Texhnolyze) and a gripping, bone-chilling script by writer Seishi Minakami (Boogiepop Phantom) which, together with the lighting and music, creates an eerie ambiance that sets the stage for this supernatural, compelling mystery. Kon masterfully crafts a journey into paranoid delusions and questionable reality, as Paranoia Agent follows a mysterious boy on rollerblades who has been attacking people in Tokyo.

Now why do we care? Because these children, my fellow club members, have the potential to be real anime fans. It’s our duty to engross them in something that is not backed by a merchandise gimmick.

By the way, anyone still have that Charizard pokemon card? It was worth $120 or close to that 4 years ago. I think it’s 1.20 cents now…
