Japan Advised To Promote ‘Gross National Cool’ As Foreign Policy

Yahoo News and Gorkha Patra via the AFP reports experts have advised Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Monday to utilize the nation’s strong global following in films, pop culture and anime to promote Japan’s ‘Gross National Cool’ overseas. According to a report issued by the Japan Forum on International Relations: “Japan has developed a full range of admired cultural resources, from the Japanese sense of beauty appreciated sincethe mid-19th century by foreigners such as Lafcadio Hearn and Bruno Taut to today’s movies and anime,” it said. “These cultural assets are now considered a part of Japan’s strength, as is evident from the expression now being bandied about, ‘Japan’s Gross National Cool’.”
Special Thanks to Daniel Zelter for his Yahoo link submission.

    Tamagotchi is back!

With a bigger screen, more dynamic graphics and new infrared technology, Bandai America Incorporated’s Tamagotchi Connection has been named one of the hottest toys this holiday season.
    Tamagotchi Connection’s many accolades include:
§ Selected as one of the coveted “Hot Dozen” by Toy Wishes Magazine, which annually predicts the toys that will be in the greatest demand during the holiday buying season.
§ Honored as one of the top 10 toys of 2004 by Yahooligans!, which surveyed more than 185,000 kids across the country.
§ Featured in Kidzworld.com’s top toy countdown, where voting for the top 10 toys is still open at www.kidzworld.com.
§ Included on the Toys “R” Us “Joy List” as a hot gift idea for kids 8-11 years old.
§ Included in ShopKo’s hot holiday toy list.
§ The egg-shaped, handheld electronic toy was also a finalist in the inaugural Ultimate Toy Awards in the categories of “Tech Toys” and “Best Toy of 2004.”

“Tamagotchi Connection has already exceeded all our initial sales projections in Japan, Europe and the United States, making the world’s original ‘virtual pet’ a success once again,” said Bill Beebe, senior vice president of sales and marketing. “Not only does the Tamagotchi simulate the life cycle of a real pet that you can feed, play and nurture into an adult, we’ve increased the play value by adding a fun new feature that allows kids to connect with their friends so that their Tamagotchis can swap gifts or play games with one other.”

Tamagotchi Connection allows you to collect and store up to 50 friends. Once an adult, your Tamagotchi can connect with a compatible friend and have a second-generation Tamagotchi that can be cared for and nurtured into an adult to create more generations to come.

With only a few days left for shopping, Bandai America has a wide range of must-have toys for boys and girls of all ages this holiday season. For young boys into action and adventure, Power Rangers DinoThunder features a collection of 12” battlized figures, deluxe vehicles and the Deluxe Megazords, which have battery operated action and interchanging pieces. Kids can also join forces with their favorite teen superheroes from the hit animated property Teen Titans with the Titans’ Launch Tower Playset.
For little girls, the mini-doll sensation Strawberry Shortcake features a collection of “scent-sational” small dolls and playsets, as well as the Singin’ Surprise Strawberry Shortcake plush. This interactive doll comes with unique color recognition technology that can trigger games, sing-a-longs and stories. And for those older girls into fun, fashion and friends, the T’neez are a group of bendable and poseable small dolls that love hanging out together at the Groove Mall playset.

    Anime Network in trouble

Reports from within ADV Films and The Anime Network have confirmed that The Anime Network Video on Demand offering on Comcast’s On Demand service may be in Jeopardy. Comcast, the largest carrier of The Anime Network, is reported to be possibly looking into offering their own competing service. TAN is looking for fan support and is hoping that viewers contact their cable companies and “Demand your Anime.”

So, what are we going to do about that? We’re going to fight, yeah! Here’s what AN had to say:

    Anime Fans of America:

You’ve made Anime Network, the only dedicated anime channel in America, a breakout sensation on Video on Demand. Thank you.

But now, Anime Network’s continued operation and expansion is in jeopardy. Despite the overwhelming success of Anime Network on Demand, certain cable executives think they can program any old anime, and that the fans of America won’t know the difference. That’s just not right.

We need every anime fan in America to make their preference for Anime Network heard. Log on to www.theanimenetwork.com, fill out a simple form and send your desire for a 24 hour Anime Network directly to the decision makers at America’s largest cable company. Or call the good folks at Comcast directly at (215) 665-1700 and say, “I’ll switch for Anime Network.” Between now and the end of the year, every fan, every email, every phone call counts.

Remember, while others may claim to have an “anime channel,” there is only one Anime Network. The first and only network built by fans, run by fans, always for fans. For over 13 years, ADV Films has been a leader in bringing anime to North America, but we need your help to continue our effort to bring about the next major anime paradigm shift. Call now. Call often. Send a fax or email directly to the decision makers via www.theanimenetwork.com. Encourage your friends, family and roommates to do the same.

Comcast may doubt the passion and commitment of the Anime fans of America, but we feel underestimating anime fans is a major mistake.

Thank you for your continued support of Anime Network. Go out and make some noise for unadulterated anime on TV. There’s only one true source…Anime Network.

    Troops move out!

    Missing DVDs

Charlotte was not kidding. We really are missing DVDs, and as much as I don’t want to I will be forced to take collateral in the future for those who do not bring what they are supposed to when they are supposted to. I know it’s possible to forget something. It happened to me once last year, but people we are missing things from september! Come on. If I have to I will hunt you down. I won’t post who hasn’t returned these things as of yet, but if they’re are not back by the break I will have no quams about posting your name on the site for all to see. Anyhow, here’s the complete list of what we’re missing.

    Rahxephon 1
    Read or Die
Record of the Lodoss War 1
    Clamp School Detectives
    Naruto 3

I am aware that the last two are rather recent, but the first three are not. Please bring them back. I am not normally this bitchy, but come on. I always feel bad when people ask for something that is supposed to be in our library, but isn’t because it was never returned. Some things are missing from last year, so I can’t do anything about them, but I refuse to loose a single DVD this year. Ja ne!

    Friday,
    New Layout :O

Hi, everyone! ^0^ I’m Charlotte, the short little Asian girl with the black three-sizes-too-large Harvey Mudd College sweater that plots sits in the corner with the lovely people that manage the library! You probably don’t know me, but that’s okay. I don’t bite (hard), and won’t be the person posting a lot of stuff here, so you can all rest easy. ;)

As you can see, I’ve taken the liberty of posting a new layout, which I’ve been told is a little girly. >.>; For that reason, I’m working on a darker and slightly more male-friendly version, though you must realize that I am not a male and therefore will not be doing a fantastically good job. Until I finish that galvanizing project, the “Change Your Skin” link will lead to absolutely nothing. Therefore, you’re going to have to live with Tohru, Kenshin, Kaoru, Faye, Shuichi, and Ryuichi for a bit. I’m sure you’ll survive just fine. ^^

Feel free to suggest links and/or content by e-mailing me at psycho@shining-abyss.net. I’m open to suggestions and probably won’t say no unless your suggestion is incredibly stupid. You can also talk to me at the next club meeting. I’ll probably be wearing a black jacket or sweater, and will be talking to either one of the board members or the Latin teacher. ^^; Another easy way to spot me… is… well, look for the shortest person in the room. >.>

There’s always good news and bad news, or so it seems, and I’ve got a bit of bad news for y’all. The co-treasurers (or whatever they are; I lost count), Rita and Caitlin, aren’t exactly pleased with the small amount of people that have been borrowing items from the library and deciding not to return them. Please read the Major Club Notices page for more information regarding this matter. Don’t make us take collaterals! We don’t need your gym shoes stinking up the Japanese classroom.

If you want to comment on anything, join the Forums! If you’re staying away from them because they’re not as busy as they could be, join and make the darn thing more busy. A few of the board members are busy during club meetings, so the forum could be a good place to meet them. ^^

I’m out. A good place to find me is over e-mail. I check that fairly often. Have fun, kids! <3 (And as a side note, if they haven’t already, Caitlin and Xavier should check their e-mail right now. :D)

    Friday,
    I’m stepping down

Okay! Layout is going to change soon. Website building isn’t my greatest skill. I’m more of a gundam model builder ;) So, I’m going to step down from managing the site. It’s going to be put in Charlotte’s hands.

Why? 1) Her website design skills 0wnz0r mine 2) The Junior year is the hardest, most test filled year of high school, which means I cannot manage the site all the time. 3) I’ll be able to concentrate on getting more content for the club, the site, and the forums.

The site will be in better hands than mine. I thank everyone for supporting the club community so far this year. The interaction between staff and member is greater this year thanks in part to the site and recently the forum.

Now, if I can only get out more content rich newsletters. ;)

Don’t worry though, I’ll still be posting news and administrating the forum.

Note to Charlotte: Can I still make the polls?

Tokyopop Announces 5th Rising Stars Of Manga Competition

TOKYOPOP Inc., the country’s leading manga publisher, is pleased to announce the highly anticipated fifth Rising Stars of Manga competition, launching on December 1, 2004 and running through February 15, 2005. Aspiring artists and writers are encouraged to submit their 15-to-20-page manga—along with completed entry forms—to TOKYOPOP for the chance to join the next generation of nationally published manga-ka. A handful of talented winners will score cash prizes and have their winning entries presented in the next Rising Stars anthology, to be published in Summer 2005. Due to overwhelming demand, the competition will introduce a brand-new People’s Choice on-line component where the top 20 finalists will have their entire entries posted on the TOKYOPOP website and judged by the fans.

“We are really pleased to open up the Rising Stars judging to the fans,” comments Rob Valois, TOKYOPOP editor. “Since so many people have been vocal on the message boards and at industry conventions, we’re offering them all a chance to shape the future of manga. I’m personally excited to see how the fans’ favorite will compare to our own.”

As the U.S. market leader in localized manga and the sponsor of the first-ever manga competition in the country, TOKYOPOP is on a mission to identify and nurture the artists and writers who will define American manga in the years ahead. A manga revolution is sweeping the U.S., and a new generation is being inspired by this innovative art form. The essence of manga is not restricted to work from to its birthplace in Japan—it can embrace Western characters, storylines and culture. TOKYOPOP’s expanded competition invites creators living in America and working in English to submit their work. The top seven entries, as selected by TOKYOPOP’s editorial staff and the on-line People’s Choice selection, will receive monetary prizes and be published by the fifth Rising Stars of Manga anthology. In addition, all the winners will have an exclusive opportunity to pitch a full-length manga story idea to TOKYOPOP executives for possible development as a graphic novel series. Entrants are encouraged to submit content from all genres—comedy, drama, horror, science fiction, action, fantasy, romance—and even under-represented subjects such as political, historical or instructional manga. Complete details for the fifth Rising Stars of Manga competition are available NOW on TOKYOPOP’s website at: www.tokyopop.com/news/mangatalent/index.php.
